Active Projects in the Spangler Lab

De novo Protein Design for Rare Earth Element Separation
The project aims to create tailored de novo proteins for separation of rare earth elements from mixed acid waste streams.
Funding support: DARPA SPREE and VCU Commercialization Fund

Designing de novo Proteins to Control Nucleation and Growth of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles
The goal of this project is to engineer proteins that better control nanocrystal quality and size. We are using experimental data to develop a machine learning model to predict proteins that create semiconductors for optoelectronic applications.
Funding Support: Department of Defense

Continuous Peptide Manufacturing
In this project we aim to develop green, low cost methods for the continuous manufacturing of biologics, such as GLP1-RA, using E. coli.
Funding Support: ACS Green Chemistry Institute Pharmaceutical Roundtable Grant
